I notice you say cause of your disability..
if a trike is built or coverted for a disabled person it does not require an MSVA test..
But I think you must just be slipping through the net with the hydraulic handbrake, it should have a mechanical system seperate to the hydraulic one..

WELL DONE YOU..

I did wonder and it's the same old chap who does it every year I guess I was wondering how it would work when he finally retires!

I was thinking of changing the system as I frankly dont like the idea of a hydro handbrake myself but as it has park i've been puttin it off.

Where would I find a mechanical front calliper to make a brake?

You would need a mechanical rear hand brake, the same as a car.
The rear end is classed as a car and in so needs to be built and tested as one. Front brakes even though mechanical, will not pass as a hand brake.
If you think about it, an automatic car has to have a hand brake even though it has a park facility on the gearbox, once over you could get away with a stick through the front handlebar brake but not any more.
Just treat your trike as a car when it comes to to the brake part of the MOT.

Here is the definitive answer (unless things have changed without notification again)
Handbrake must not be hydraulic but must be mechanically operated, stated in section 3.1 MOT manual it must prevent at least 2 wheels from turning or with a three wheeled vehicles at least 1 wheel from turning, this doesn't state whether front or rear, so it can be the front wheel.
I know of at least 1 member who has the handbrake holding the front wheel.
Things change without notification, my good friend James took his trike to the same garage for years and was suddenly told last week he NOW must have a rear fog light because of the width of the trike, mine doesn't need one but I think his always should have had one and it has been overlooked and not a change in MOT rules as told by the examiner.

the handbrake must operate all the wheels of one axle , therefore you can have the handbrake on the front wheel as long as is mechanical and not hydraulic..

Just for info but no use to Tinbasher, Saabs have, (or had) the handbrake operating on the front wheels so front wheel habdbrakes are used on cars anyway. May be of interest to anyone wanting to do a disk conversion as well as the front disk has a drum built in for a shoe handbrake, similar to Vectra rear brakes. As Saab is GM Vectra calipers fit as well although you need the right ones for the disk diameter.
